Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World Officially Announced

It’s official – three years after the release of Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince, Square Enix has unveiled a brand-new entry in its beloved Pokémon-like spin-off RPG series. Titled The Withered World, this new installment was revealed during today’s brief update from the Dragon Quest team on YouTube. Notably, the same update also included news about Dragon Quest 12: Beyond Dreams, previously known as The Flames of Fate. This marks the first addition to the Dragon Quest Monsters series since The Dark Prince was launched in 2023, and fans can expect the familiar monster-wrangling action that the franchise is known for.

While Square Enix has yet to highlight any actual gameplay, the teaser trailer does provide glimpses of various monsters running, flying, and scampering toward the viewer – all depicted in the franchise’s iconic, cartoon-style aesthetic that fans have come to love.

When Will Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World Be Released?

As of now, the exact release date for Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World remains unclear. However, Square Enix mentioned during its showcase that the developers "hope to release" the spin-off sometime "before" the launch of Dragon Quest 12. As for Dragon Quest 12 itself, its release date is still uncertain. Fans are keeping their fingers crossed in hopes that there won’t be any further delays and that both titles will arrive in the near future.

Fan Reactions and Expectations

The announcement of The Withered World has already sparked excitement among fans. In the comments section underneath the teaser trailer, one fan expressed relief, stating: "Thank God they announced this after that DQ12 announcement. If all we got was news of restarted development, I would've been super disappointed... more Monsters games is always cool."

Meanwhile, other fans are hopeful that the new game will address some of the shortcomings of its predecessor, The Dark Prince. One commenter wrote: "Dark Prince was a little undercooked; hoping for a big glow up." It’s clear that expectations are high for improvements, particularly in areas like the PvP experience. Aren’t we all hoping for the best? Only time will tell how Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World performs, but early indications suggest that it holds promise.
