Canva's Transformation in the Era of AI

Like many companies navigating the new era of artificial intelligence (AI), Canva has experienced an “interesting” year. Reflecting on the past six months, Cameron Adams, cofounder and chief product officer of the Sydney-based company, shares insights on why the so-called SaaSpocalypse never caused him sleepless nights, how Canva transitioned from a design company to an AI company without losing its core essence, and why being only 1% of the way there is actually the most exciting aspect of their journey.

Insights from Cannes Lions Festival

This article is an abridged transcript of an interview from Rapid Response, recorded live at the Cannes Lions festival. The session was hosted by Bob Safian, the former editor-in-chief of Fast Company. Rapid Response, produced by the team behind the Masters of Scale podcast, delivers candid discussions with top business leaders as they navigate real-time challenges. Reflecting on a Transformative Year

During the interview, Cameron Adams was asked about the challenges of 2023, the rapid advancements in AI, and how Canva has adapted to a new kind of pressure. When asked, “Has it been a good year? What’s made it a dangerous year?” Adams responded:

“I’d probably say it’s been an interesting year. I think we’ve always been running a marathon at Canva. We’ve always had an incredibly long-term vision. This year feels like we’re sprinting that marathon just a little bit.”

From a Design Company to an AI Company

Adams also elaborated on Canva’s shift in identity, noting that they now consider themselves an AI company that does design, rather than a design company that incorporates AI. This represents a significant transformation for a company of Canva’s scale. On this shift, he explained:

“It has been a big change. Having a strong bench of AI researchers and machine learning (ML) engineers has enabled us to move rapidly on the product and, particularly, to develop our own unique blend of AI. It’s not just repackaging a large language model (LLM). It’s deep technical research and unique IP that now exists within the Canva platform.”

A Return to Startup Roots

Over the past year, Canva’s team has scaled significantly, allowing the company to ship products at a faster pace. However, this shift has also introduced a new rhythm to their product development cycle. Adams expressed excitement about the changes, describing it as a return to the company’s startup roots:

“It’s not thinking about 6,000 people and moving them all like the Titanic. It is a bunch of speedboats now going around and delivering as much customer value as we possibly can on a week-by-week cadence.”

Conclusion

Canva’s journey reflects the challenges and opportunities of embracing AI in a rapidly evolving landscape. By redefining itself as an AI-driven company, leveraging cutting-edge technology, and fostering a return to its agile roots, Canva has positioned itself to navigate the complexities of the future with confidence and innovation.
