Capcom's Warning About Monster Hunter Games and Windows 10

Your cuddly dinosaur aunties at Capcom have issued a warning: they cannot "guarantee" that several Monster Hunter games will continue to run on Windows 10 PCs after Microsoft ends support for the operating system on October 14th, 2023.

Capcom's Official Announcement

On the fateful day when Windows 10 support ceases, Capcom has stated that they "will no longer guarantee" that Monster Hunter: World, Monster Hunter Rise, and Monster Hunter Wilds will function properly on Windows 10 systems. While this does not mean these games will become immediately unplayable, Capcom has cautioned that "future system updates or game title updates may make the game incompatible on Windows 10 systems."

Limited Support After October 14th

Capcom further explained that any issues encountered while playing these Monster Hunter games on Windows 10 PCs after October 14th will no longer be thoroughly investigated. They clarified that "support can only be provided based on information from before support for Windows 10 was discontinued." This marks the end of their commitment to troubleshooting problems for the operating system.

Microsoft’s Windows 10 Sunset

If this is the first time you're hearing about Windows 10 nearing its end of life, Microsoft has confirmed that Windows 10 apps and drivers will continue to boot and run normally after the cessation of official support. However, users will no longer receive free security updates, bug fixes, or major feature updates.

Extended Support for Specific Apps

Microsoft 365 apps running on both personal and commercial Windows 10 PCs will still receive security updates until October 10th, 2028, and feature updates until August 2026. Additionally, Microsoft is offering a paid Extended Security Update (ESU) subscription for users wishing to maintain Windows 10 beyond the cut-off date. Availability depends on your region and the version of Windows 10 you're using.

Free ESU Updates in the EEA

In a move welcomed by many, Microsoft has decided to make ESU updates free for users in the European Economic Area (EEA) until October 2026. This decision comes after pressure from consumer protection organization Euroconsumers, as reported by Particle Collider Gamer.

Impact on PC Users

The end of Windows 10 support—dubbed "Windows10mageddon"—is likely to leave many PC users scrambling. While some concerns border on Y2K-style hysteria, one study suggests that around half of Windows PCs still do not run Windows 11. For those whose machines lack the necessary specifications for Windows 11, purchasing a new PC may be the only option. This situation is likely to prompt more warnings from game publishers urging players to upgrade their systems.

Note: This article has been updated to include Microsoft's recent decision to offer free ESU updates to users in the EEA until October 2026.
