A Former Destiny Executive Praises New Witcher 3 Expansion

A former Destiny boss and ex-Bungie executive has expressed support for the idea of another expansion for The Witcher 3. According to him, this is a great way to engage a new generation of gamers who may not have been old enough to experience the game when it first launched nearly a decade ago.

CD Projekt Red Introduces "Songs of the Past"

This week, CD Projekt Red announced The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Songs of the Past, an upcoming expansion for the celebrated 2015 RPG. This marks the first significant new content for the game in years. Former Bungie vice president Mark Noseworthy took to social media to commend the strategy, highlighting its potential to revitalize the franchise before attention shifts to the highly anticipated The Witcher 4.

"Great idea on a couple of levels," Noseworthy tweeted. "It gets the Witcher (game brand) in the current gamer discussion and grows the audience for W4. Half a generation of players weren't of age when W3 shipped."

Fool's Theory Takes the Lead

The new expansion is being developed by Fool's Theory, a studio comprised of many former CDPR veterans. The team is also working on a remake of the original The Witcher. Noseworthy sees this as a strategic move, stating that it allows the studio to gain experience on a smaller project while positioning itself to contribute to The Witcher 4 in the future. "It brings up a partner developer who can contribute to W4 (now they've got their reps)," he added.

What We Know About "Songs of the Past"

While details about the expansion are still limited, it has been confirmed that players will once again step into Geralt of Rivia's shoes. The expansion is set to launch next year for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.

Expansion vs. DLC: CDPR's Clarification

CDPR also clarified their terminology, explaining why they are calling Songs of the Past an "expansion" rather than a "DLC." According to the developer, DLCs are typically smaller, free pieces of content, whereas expansions offer hours of new gameplay, including "new story, characters, etc." This distinction underscores the scope and ambition of their new project.

No Expansion Plans for The Witcher 4

Fans of the series should not expect similar expansions for The Witcher 4. CDPR has stated that it would be "difficult" to create extra content for that game given their current roadmap, which involves releasing three Witcher titles within a six-year span.
