Voice Actors Deserve Greater Recognition

Voice actors often receive insufficient acknowledgment despite their vital contributions—breathing life into characters and representing games at major industry events. Yet, they are sometimes relegated to footnote status within the development pipeline. A performer from Dragon Age: Inquisition credits two stars of Baldur’s Gate 3 with significantly elevating the professional standing of voice performers across the entire industry.

The Art and Labor of Video Game Performance

“Video game acting is, at times, hard, demanding, and challenging—but it’s also joyous, and it’s filled—literally—with blood, sweat, and tears, especially if you’re on the [performance capture] stage,” said Alix Wilton Regan, who voiced the female Inquisitor in Dragon Age: Inquisition, speaking to GamesRadar+ at the BAFTA Games Awards. “So video game actors deserve their flowers, because we help pull the audience in—to elevate the writing, the animation, the direction, and the tone.”

Narrative Impact and Emotional Resonance

Indeed, few statements ring more true. Voice actors infuse characters with nuance and personality, enriching narrative depth and forging a closer emotional connection with players. They routinely transform already-strong games into enduring masterpieces.

A Collective Awakening in the Industry

“I give a massive shout-out here to the Baldur’s Gate 3 crew, because they were the ones who made all the other video game actors sit up and take note—and realize, ‘Yeah, actually, we are loved; our work does have value; and we too deserve to stand up and be counted,’” Regan continues.

She elaborates: “I’ve literally said this to Jennifer English’s face—or to Neil Newbon. I’ve gone up to Ben Starr and told him, ‘You changed the game.’” Starr, ever the charmer, gracefully redirected the praise—reminding her that she voiced the Inquisitor, a defining role in one of the most critically acclaimed RPGs of recent years.

Legacy and Influence Across Franchises

While Baldur’s Gate 3 dominates recent memory, Dragon Age: Inquisition was once the benchmark fantasy RPG—a cultural touchstone in its own right. It is nearly impossible to envision either title’s success without the artistry and dedication of these performers. May their impact—and recognition—continue to grow.

“Lightning in a Bottle” and Industry Lessons

As the actor behind Astarion observes, Baldur’s Gate 3 was “lightning in a bottle”—and it “proved a lot of things” that major studios, “who are just really chasing the money,” urgently need to learn from.
