Challenges Facing a New Dragon Age Game

A new Dragon Age game would face significant challenges getting off the ground, according to Mark Darrah, the series' former producer and long-time BioWare veteran. Despite the franchise's historical success, recent developments have cast doubt on its future.

The Struggles of the Dragon Age Series

BioWare's epic fantasy series has faced a turbulent journey in recent years. This is particularly surprising given the critical and commercial success of Dragon Age: Inquisition. However, the decade-long gap between games, coupled with multiple internal reboots, culminated in the 2024 release of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, which was met with only mild sales and lukewarm reception.

EA's Complicated Relationship with Game Development

Speaking to FRVR, Darrah suggested that the issues surrounding Dragon Age: The Veilguard and the broader struggles of the series could stem from EA’s complex approach to shipping games. He shared an anecdote: "Someone once described EA to me as a hedge fund with a video game hobby that it wished it didn’t spend so much money on, and I think that remains true."

Darrah, who spent over 20 years at BioWare, expressed skepticism about any imminent changes to this situation. "I have no concept of who could, would, possibly pitch that at EA," he stated, referencing EA’s extensive roster of dormant intellectual properties. "You can perhaps find Dragon Age laying in a damp cell alongside Titanfall and Mirror's Edge."

Internal Resistance and Structural Challenges

Darrah outlined several reasons why a new Dragon Age could face insurmountable obstacles. He questioned who at BioWare would take the initiative to pitch the project, noting the potential for internal resistance. "The other option is somebody else within the EA organization decides they're gonna pitch a Dragon Age," he explained. "What I expect would happen if they try to do that is somebody at BioWare would essentially become one of those people jumping under the vents to rip that person apart. I suspect that it wouldn't happen for a variety of reasons."

Impact of Layoffs and Limited Resources

BioWare has been hit hard by mass layoffs at EA over the past few years, which has significantly impacted the studio’s capacity to undertake major projects. With resources already stretched thin due to the development of the next Mass Effect game, the feasibility of simultaneously producing another Dragon Age title seems highly unlikely.

Uncertainty from EA's Potential Buyout

Adding another layer of complexity is the impending proposed buyout of EA by a group of investment firms led by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Group. Darrah questioned whether the new ownership would have any interest in BioWare or the Dragon Age series at all. "I could argue yes and no… do you want BioWare at all in this world?" he mused.

Fans' Dedication to Dragon Age

Despite the uncertain future of the series, Dragon Age fans remain passionate and committed. As Darrah noted, "It’s a really compelling place to be left in." Rather than giving up, fans continue to expand the RPG universe through their dedication and creativity.
