Windows 11 26H2 Release Confirmed

The public rollout of Windows 11 26H2 could begin at any time, possibly next week or the following week. However, this is not an update worth getting excited about unless you care about the Windows lifecycle or are planning a fresh installation. In the latter case, 26H2 could be the right time for a clean install.

MS has quietly released Windows 11 26H2 evaluation ISOs for enterprises. These ISOs are not intended for consumers. Instead, they allow IT administrators to test Windows 11 26H2 on their systems and determine whether their applications, drivers, and tools are compatible before deploying it across their organizations.

Windows 11 26H2 entered the Release Preview Channel last month for a final round of testing. Combined with the release of the evaluation ISOs, this strongly suggests that MS is preparing for the public rollout.

Why Is MS Releasing Windows 11 26H2?

Windows 11 26H2 is based on the same platform release as versions 24H2 and 25H2, codenamed “Germanium.” In other words, all three Windows 11 versions share the same underlying core, so moving from one to another is not a major platform upgrade. This is also why upgrading from 24H2 to 25H2—or even 26H2—can take only a few minutes, with a lower risk of disruption.

Whether you currently use Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2, you receive the same monthly cumulative updates and largely the same features, improvements, and fixes, although the build numbers differ. The same pattern will continue with Windows 11 26H2. For example, a single cumulative update can cover both Windows 11 24H2 and 26H2 while the two versions remain supported, and Windows will look largely the same on both.

Why, then, is MS releasing Windows 11 26H2 if all three versions share the same core? Support for the Home and Pro editions of Windows 11 25H2 ends on October 12, 2027, a little over a year from now, while support for the same editions of Windows 11 24H2 ends in less than a month.

MS will not continue maintaining version 25H2 beyond its lifecycle, so it is releasing 26H2 with a new support window. This also provides more time to prepare for the next major release, which could be 27H2.

Windows 11 Support Lifecycle

• Windows 11 Home and Pro: Annual feature updates receive 24 months of support.
• Windows 11 Enterprise and Education: Annual feature updates receive 36 months of support.
• Windows 11 26H2: MS has not yet published the final end-of-support dates. The exact dates will depend on when version 26H2 becomes generally available.

MS’s other option was to release a new platform update for Windows 11, which would have made the 2026 update a major release. However, that would directly contradict the company’s earlier commitment to improving Windows stability. At this stage, MS cannot afford to release a new Windows version based on a new platform because doing so could introduce additional upgrade and compatibility problems.

Windows Is Buggy Without a Major Platform Change—and a New One Could Make It Worse

When Windows 11 23H2 was beginning to stabilize, MS released Windows 11 24H2 as a new platform release. As a result, installing Windows 11 24H2 could take several minutes—or even hours—and sometimes involved driver compatibility problems.

The upgrade went smoothly on some PCs, while others encountered major issues. With versions 25H2 and 26H2, MS is taking a different approach that allows it to add new Windows features without introducing major platform releases. This reduces the risk of bugs while still enabling Windows to evolve for the agentic era.

“Updating from one version of Windows to another from the same branch greatly reduces the risk of application or hardware compatibility issues,” MS explained in a document reviewed by Windows Latest. In this context, “same branch” refers to versions based on the same platform release.

MS noted that versions on the same servicing branch share “the source code,” “security and non-security fixes,” and “compatibility and regression testing done prior to release.”

The same principle applies to Windows 11 26H2, as MS stated in a document previously reviewed by WindowsLatest.com:

“What does this mean for moving from Windows 11, version 25H2 to 26H2? We introduced new features without regressions or compatibility issues because 26H2 is the same source code with only the additional features turned on.”

“If an issue affects 26H2, it will also affect 25H2, and vice versa. Likewise, an update that would fix that issue is the same update for both versions. It is the same source code, the same update package to install.”

What Happens If Windows 11 26H2 Rolls Out Next Week or the Following Week?

Windows 11 26H2 is expected to arrive on eligible PCs as an optional feature update, but it is technically an eKB, or enablement package. On up-to-date PCs running Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2, installation should take only a few minutes and require a single restart.

An eKB changes the build and operating system version numbers while activating features and other changes that have already been delivered through previous updates. The underlying platform remains unchanged.
