Windows 11 26H2 could be only hours away, with the public rollout potentially beginning today. If it is delayed, October 6 is another possible date, as Windows feature updates typically launch on Tuesdays. MS has not confirmed either date, but ESDs—Windows installation files—for Windows 11 26H2 have now appeared, indicating that a release may be imminent.
As spotted by Windows Latest, Windows 11 26H2 ESD files are now available on MS’s servers and carry Build 26300.9457. This could be the build installed with the Windows 11 2026 Update.
What Are ESDs, and How Do They Relate to Windows 11 26H2 ISOs?
ESD stands for Electronic Software Distribution and contains compressed Windows installation images. When you use MS’s Media Creation Tool to create a Windows installation USB drive or ISO, you download ESDs that support the entire process.
ESDs are not normally offered as direct downloads on the consumer Windows 11 download page. Most users will never need to download or convert one manually.
“When a version of Windows is ready to be released, the final code within the main branch is built, packaged, and shipped through various media types. This includes ISO images and feature update packages available on Windows Update,” MS noted in a document seen by Windows Latest.
Because the ESDs are now hosted on MS’s servers, the company appears to be preparing Windows 11 26H2 installation media for public rollout. ESDs also appeared before the rollout of Windows 11 25H2, although there is no fixed countdown between their appearance and a public release.
As previously reported, MS’s annual Windows 11 releases have consistently arrived on Tuesdays.
What Is the Purpose of Windows 11 26H2 as a Minor Release?
Windows 11 follows an annual feature update cadence, meaning it is expected to receive one feature update or new version each year, together with a new support lifecycle. Annual releases receive 24 months of support for Home and Pro editions and 36 months for Enterprise and Education editions.
Windows 11 24H2 was released nearly two years ago, and support for its Home and Pro editions ends in October 2026. Similarly, Windows 11 25H2, which shipped last year, will lose support for those editions in just over a year. Windows 11 26H2 provides supported PCs with a new support window.
Windows 11 26H2 Still Installs as a Small Enablement Package
Windows 11 26H2 is this year’s annual feature update, but it does not introduce any new consumer features. No new features appeared in testing. For enterprises, however, there are two notable changes to the default settings.
First, Point-in-time restore, which allows Windows to be rolled back to an earlier state when something goes wrong, will be enabled by default on enterprise-managed PCs with a Windows partition of at least 200GB.
Windows settings backup, previously called Windows Backup for Organizations, will also be enabled by default on eligible enterprise PCs. Existing administrator policies will continue to apply, and restoring backups will still require administrator configuration.
Point-in-time restore is already enabled by default on eligible consumer PCs.
On up-to-date Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 PCs, version 26H2 will install as a small eKB, or enablement package, because all three versions share the same platform.
“When devices move between Windows versions on the same servicing branch, the update experience is much closer to a monthly quality update than to a traditional operating system replacement,” MS explained in a document seen by Windows Latest.
The document also highlights “simpler planning for IT because testing can focus on newly enabled features instead of re-validating the entire operating system stack.”
