Although some industry trends have been received negatively, others have become features that gamers everywhere appreciate. Cross-play, or cross-platform support, allows players to connect with friends and other players using different systems. Ten years ago, this feature was absent from most titles; today, hundreds of games let players compete or cooperate regardless of their chosen platform.

Cross-platform games are still relatively uncommon, making it difficult to determine which titles both support the feature and are worth playing. For friends using different systems, this collection highlights the 33 best cross-platform games available now, presented in no particular order. Fortnite

Epic Games established several standards that remain influential today, but adding cross-platform functionality to Fortnite may be its most significant contribution. Mortal Kombat 1 does not reinvent the fighting genre, but it remains highly enjoyable and has a demanding skill ceiling that is not for the faint of heart.

Forza Horizon 5

Although racing games are less plentiful than they once were, few can match Forza Horizon 5. This visually impressive racing game features a large open world set in a fictionalized version of Mexico. It is also one of the best games on Game Pass, allowing subscribers to play without purchasing it separately.

To join a friend in a specific experience, players only need to ensure that it has been properly downloaded. Mobile users can connect with console players, while VR users can create a party that others can join.

The Finals

Borderlands 4

Borderlands 4 is the newest installment in the well-known looter-shooter franchise. Unlike Borderlands 3, its cross-platform functionality works correctly. Every platform supports cross-play, and the Shift system makes connecting relatively straightforward. Players create a Shift account, link it to their system, and let others add them through that account before joining a party. Party members should ideally be near the same level, although people at different points in the story can still play together. Borderlands 4 Shift codes can provide additional assistance when searching for valuable loot.

Chivalry 2

Chivalry 2 is a first-person action game set in medieval times. Players can participate in enormous battles using bows, arrows, swords, and shields, or mount a horse for faster combat. The game recreates historical battles and conveys the experience of soldiers in the medieval era. Its combat is highly realistic, allowing characters to continue fighting despite suffering extensive damage. Friends can play together across any supported platform.

Smite

Although Smite may not be the market’s most popular MOBA, it is an enjoyable free-to-play experience that supports friends and other players across its available systems. With experience, players can master their preferred “deities” and apply that knowledge across several modes. The upcoming sequel, Smite 2, will also support cross-platform play between current-generation consoles and PC.

Deep Rock Galactic

Deep Rock Galactic sends players on solo or cooperative expeditions to some of the galaxy’s most dangerous mining locations. Teams clear enemy-infested mining sites while collecting resources and leveling their characters. The game is not technically a looter shooter, so defeated enemies do not drop weapons and items. However, it includes horror elements and numerous randomized levels. Cross-platform support has limitations: PS4 and PS5 players can connect, while PC users must use the Xbox Store version to play with Xbox console users. Steam players are restricted to other Steam users.

Split Fiction

• Genre: Action-Adventure

Split Fiction is the latest cooperative adventure from Hazelight Studios, the developer behind Game of the Year winner It Takes Two. Although it is not a sequel, it expands on many of that game’s concepts. A partner is required, but the Friend’s Pass allows the owner to invite someone on any supported platform without requiring that person to buy the game.

Two players control characters attempting to escape a virtual-reality experiment that has gone wrong. Their journey moves through cyberpunk-inspired cities and fantasy lands while shifting between platforming, third-person shooting, vehicle racing, and other genres. The experience earned a rare score of 10 in GameSpot’s Split Fiction review.

Monster Hunter Wilds

Monster Hunter Wilds brings back the series’ established formula while adding requested mechanics, a dynamic world, and combat updates that can alter playstyles between encounters. New features include a larger, more interactive map, rideable mounts, and a secondary weapon that can be selected at any time.

The game offers substantial content, including a roughly 15-hour campaign followed by an endgame containing dozens of additional monsters and quests. Up to three friends can join during any part of the game. However, connecting with players on other platforms can be unintuitive, making a dedicated cross-platform explainer useful.

Marvel Rivals

Marvel Rivals made a major impact at the end of 2024 and remained successful in 2025. The free-to-play hero shooter includes nearly 40 Marvel characters across multiple modes. Each hero has distinct abilities and one of three roles: Vanguard, Duelist, or Strategist. Because each team can include only one instance of a particular hero, mastering several characters is worthwhile.

Marvel Rivals also includes numerous maps, casual and ranked modes, events, and cosmetic items. Cross-platform play is limited to casual modes; ranked play requires participants to compete exclusively with users on the same platform.

Tekken 8

Tekken 8 is the first game in the long-running franchise to include cross-platform play. It provides the large fighter roster expected from the genre, allowing players to progress through the story or compete against online opponents. It also offers unusual modes such as Tekken Ball, in which two opponents fight using a beach ball rather than their fists and feet.

A year after release, Tekken 8 continued to receive significant updates. Its Season 2 update strengthened several characters, introduced a new fighter, and made broad combat adjustments.

FragPunk

The tactical first-person shooter genre has evolved in recent years as games such as Valorant have altered the established formula. FragPunk adds its own variation through fast-paced gameplay that combines familiar and original mechanics. Teams consist of individual Lancers with unique abilities purchased through the in-game economy. Players can also buy weapons and equipment using money earned during matches.

Its major innovation is the introduction of Shard Cards, which can be activated at the beginning of a match to introduce conditions that every player must adapt to. Different combinations of cards and Lancers can dramatically change how matches unfold. Cross-platform play is available across all modes, allowing teams to coordinate their strategies before each match.

Path of Exile 2

Path of Exile 2 is an action RPG with similarities to Diablo IV. Players select from multiple classes with distinct playstyles, abilities, and equipment preferences before entering a world divided into levels and separate areas. Each level contains several bosses, side quests, and a central town. Its exceptional class design supports thousands of detailed character builds using passive abilities, active skills, and specific equipment.

Players often need to redesign their builds while progressing through the story because the difficulty curve may be more demanding than many ARPG fans expect. Enemies and bosses can be extremely challenging, and there is no conventional way to reduce the difficulty. Playing with friends can help a group maximize its damage output.

Baldur’s Gate 3

After several years of waiting, cross-platform play was added to Baldur’s Gate 3 through one of its final updates. Parties can now include up to four players across different systems. Widely regarded as one of the best recent RPGs and video games, it allows players to create a character from scratch or select a premade character with an established history, abilities, and attributes.

The adventure spans several enormous areas containing dozens of characters, extensive conversations, detailed quests, and hidden secrets. Combat is turn-based and may require an adjustment period for newcomers. Once understood, each encounter becomes a compelling strategic challenge in which players must coordinate the unique capabilities of every party member.

Split Fiction

Split Fiction requires two players and offers neither a solo option nor online matchmaking, so each player must find a willing partner. Fortunately, it supports full cross-platform play and requires only one person to purchase the game. Through the Friend Pass, the second player can join for free by accepting an invitation code.

The split-screen adventure follows two authors who become trapped in a virtual disaster involving the plots of each other’s book ideas. Through cooperative mechanics and communication, players encounter impressive visuals, humorous situations, and several side stories. Varied combat, vehicles, and other unconventional mechanics keep the experience unpredictable throughout its levels.

Arc Raiders

Arc Raiders became a modern gaming phenomenon, attracting millions of players within a few months and revitalizing the extraction-shooter genre. It closely resembles Escape from Tarkov, the foundational extraction shooter, but includes stronger social elements for playing with friends. Its proximity-chat and death-chat features alone add significant entertainment value.

Players can form parties with up to two friends before entering one of several maps with loot collected during previous runs. The central objective is to gather as much loot as possible, defeat PvE and PvP enemies, and successfully extract from the map.

Battlefield 6

Groups of up to four friends can combine class and weapon systems to create a balanced squad covering healing, damage output, and anti-vehicle equipment.

Players who do not prefer Battlefield 6’s standard multiplayer can try Battlefield Redsec, its free-to-play battle royale mode. Redsec follows a structure similar to PUBG and Warzone while retaining classic Battlefield elements, including tanks.
