Sea of Thieves Season 17 Introduces The Smuggler’s League

Rare announced Season 17 of its online pirate game, Sea of Thieves, during the Xbox Games Showcase. Titled Smugglers’ Tide, the upcoming season begins in August and introduces a mischievous new faction called The Smuggler’s League, along with new Voyages and some of the game’s most powerful explosives.

Smuggling, Salvage, and Explosive Loot

Based on the trailer, The Smuggler’s League focuses on smuggling loot, salvaging treasure and other valuables from sunken ships, and stealing cargo from rival players. New loot shown in the trailer includes crates filled with golden bottles and black gunpowder barrels. These barrels will almost certainly explode if mishandled, but players can also weaponize their destructive capabilities.

The trailer shows characters using harpoon guns to retrieve loot and employing stealth tactics to escape with explosive barrels. Although it does not provide details about faction-specific rewards, players can expect to earn several exclusive cosmetics by completing Smuggler’s Voyages and commendations.

Reapers Rule and Everwild

The current Sea of Thieves season, Reapers Rule, began on May 22 and added new content for The Reaper’s Bones faction. It also introduced a new Voyage, the ability to summon NPC skeletons to assist crews, and a portable cannon called the Cannon of Rage.

Rare is also developing Everwild, but the game did not appear at this year’s Xbox Games Showcase.
