The Last Of Us Season 3 Was Going To Bring Back Catherine O'Hara
Time: May, 15, 2026

Catherine O'Hara played Gail in The Last of Us Season 2, and she was planned to return for Season 3 before her recent passing.

Gail is Joel's therapist in Season 2, and the role was created for the TV show. Gail was a supporting character in Season 2, and while she didn't have all that many scenes, the time she was on screen was memorable due to O'Hara's impressive performance.

"I don't think it's a big spoiler to say that she was gonna be in our show again, because of course she was," Mazin said in an appearance on the Scriptnotes podcast (via GamesRadar). "She's so good. But she was stolen from all of us. The thing that's upsetting me is I don't get to see her in other stuff. I don't care about my show. I wanted to see her in other things, cause what else was gonna happen?"

O'Hara died on January 30 from a pulmonary embolism with cancer as the underlying cause. She was 71. Pedro Pascal, who plays Joel on The Last of Us, said he is "eternally grateful" for O'Hara. "There is less light in my world," he wrote. "This lucky world that had you, will keep you, always."

With a career spanning decades, O'Hara is known for a great many roles in film and TV, winning multiple Emmys and a Golden Globe award. She's known for the sketch comedy series SCTV and Schitt's Creek, along with the movies Home Alone and Beetlejuice, among many others.

The Last of Us Season 3 will shift the focus on tell Abby's story, and actor Kaitlyn Dever recently discussed how she was excited to have a "much bigger" role in the upcoming season.

Season 3 could be the final run for The Last of Us, according to HBO, but no official announcements have been made.

As for the game series, The Last of Us: Part III is rumored to be in the works at Naughty Dog, but this is not confirmed. The company is working on Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet right now, and some believe it may show up at the State of Play this week.
