Bruce Straley's Departure from Naughty Dog and New Creative Chapter

From 1999 to 2017, Bruce Straley played a key role at Naughty Dog—co-directing two of its best-selling titles: The Last of Us and Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. Despite this remarkable tenure, Straley stepped away from the gaming industry for several years. He has now revisited his departure in greater depth, elaborating on earlier remarks.

Motivations Behind the Exit

"I had been there 18 years. That’s a long time for anyone to stay anywhere," Straley told Polygon. "I need fresh challenges to tackle, I need new creative outlets. I’m not saying there wouldn’t have been opportunities there, but pair that feeling with the notion that I was working extremely hard on something that wasn’t mine."

Why Not Another AAA Studio?

Straley explained that he did not move to another major studio because, in his perspective, Naughty Dog represented the "pinnacle" of studios creating the types of games he admired. He also voiced hesitation about adapting to "an entirely different bureaucratic or cultural system" at another company.

Seeking Creative Autonomy

He elaborated further: "It really boils down to: Do you want to keep working for someone else and put in all the effort to create an IP, to develop characters, to build worlds that could become part of a franchise? I was compensated very well there. I received some recognition there, but it felt like it was time to step out and do it on my own. It felt like it was time to evolve my ideas and assemble a new team. It might fail spectacularly, but at least I felt it would be my failure born from my decision."

Wildflower Interactive and Coven of the Chicken Foot

At The Game Awards, Straley's newly established studio, Wildflower Interactive, revealed its first title: Coven of the Chicken Foot. This wordless, single-player adventure represents a significant departure from Straley's past projects—centering on a witch named Gertie and her creature companion as they work to honor a sacred vow. The game's release date remains unconfirmed.
