The Last of Us Season 3 Moves Forward Without Neil Druckmann

Neil Druckmann, co-creator of the original The Last of Us game universe and former co-showrunner, writer, director, and producer of the HBO series, will not return for Season 3. He officially stepped away after Season 2 to focus on his role at Naughty Dog—specifically, writing and directing the studio’s upcoming title, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.

Bella Ramsey on Druckmann’s Enduring Influence

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Bella Ramsey, who portrays Ellie, emphasized that although Druckmann is no longer actively involved, his foundational presence remains integral to the series:

“I think he left us in such good stead. And he will always be a part of the fabric of it—it’s literally his creation; the whole world. He’s still there, even though he is not. So I think it will be fine.”

Ramsey also confirmed that the cast has received the Season 3 scripts but has not yet read them.

Continuity and Creative Leadership

Druckmann previously described co-creating the HBO adaptation alongside Craig Mazin as a “career highlight” and expressed deep appreciation for their collaboration. Mazin will remain with the series as the sole showrunner for Season 3—which may serve as the show’s final season.

Casting Updates

  • Danny Ramirez, who portrayed Manny in Season 2, will not reprise his role due to scheduling conflicts.
  • The character of Manny will be recast for Season 3.
