The Last of Us Season 3: Key Updates and Creative Shifts

Season 3 will center on Abby’s story, marking a significant narrative pivot after Seasons 1 and 2 focused primarily on Ellie (Bella Ramsey). Actor Kaitlyn Dever—who portrays Abby—has shared insights into her preparation and expectations for the upcoming season.

Actor Preparation and Narrative Expansion

“I’m getting mentally and physically prepped right now. I go up in a couple days, actually, to start prep over there,” Dever told Deadline. “I’m so excited to kind of take on a much bigger role in the season.”

Without revealing plot details, Dever confirmed that Season 3 will provide greater depth and context to Abby’s storyline. She added: “I believe the fans are really going to like it”—highlighting the shift in perspective as a deliberate and compelling creative choice.

Expanded Timeline and Character Return

Season 3 will incorporate flashback sequences to explore Abby’s actions and experiences concurrent with key events involving Ellie—offering new layers to her motivations and history.

Although Abby takes center stage, Ellie returns, alongside numerous other established characters.

Production and Creative Team Changes

Season 3 is slated for release on HBO in 2027.

This season marks the first without the direct involvement of Neil Druckmann, co-creator of the original game and former executive producer of the series. Druckmann departed alongside writer Halley Gross to focus on new projects—including the upcoming series Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.

Additionally, actor Danny Ramirez (Manny, Season 2) will not return due to scheduling conflicts; his role will be recast.

Game Series Update

Rumors persist about The Last of Us: Part III being in early development at Naughty Dog; however, this remains unconfirmed by official sources.
