Will The Last of Us End with Season 3?
Many fans are speculating whether the upcoming third season of HBO’s The Last of Us will serve as the series’ final chapter—and that possibility is growing increasingly plausible.
HBO Executives Signal a Likely Conclusion
HBO programming chief Casey Bloys was asked by Deadline whether Season 3 would mark the show’s end. He responded, “It certainly seems that way.” However, Bloys stopped short of a formal confirmation, clarifying: “On decisions like that, we defer to the showrunners. So you can ask them.”
Production Timeline and Creative Leadership
Season 3 is currently slated for a 2027 premiere, though HBO has not yet announced an official release date. Craig Mazin serves as the sole showrunner for this season following Neil Druckmann’s departure.
Evolving Narrative Plans
Prior to this update, Mazin had stated that a fourth season would be essential to deliver a fully realized conclusion. Yet Bloys’ recent remarks suggest the story may instead reach its natural endpoint with Season 3.
Bloys elaborated: “Craig is still working it out whether it will be two more seasons or one more long season. It hasn’t been decided yet, and I’m following Craig’s lead on that.”
Fidelity to Source Material
Mazin has emphasized that the series will not emulate HBO’s Game of Thrones—which extended far beyond George R.R. Martin’s published novels. With no official The Last of Us: Part III game released (and none confirmed), and given how much narrative ground the TV adaptation has already covered, concluding with Season 3 feels increasingly organic.
In a 2025 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Mazin stated unequivocally: “I am not going to go past the game. I’ll just say that flat out. So if people are thinking, ‘Oh, these guys are planning the old cash grab thing…’”
What About the Game Series?
Rumors persist that Naughty Dog is developing The Last of Us: Part III, but the project remains unconfirmed. The studio is currently focused on Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, with some industry observers anticipating its potential debut at the rumored PlayStation State of Play event in February.
